(l. to r.) Jack Jacobs, Barry McCaffrey

and Brian Williams

Issued: January 2012
Statement: On Jan. 5, 2012, NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams ran a piece by Jim Miklaszewski on proposed changes to the Pentagon. Among the highlighted changes was a recommendation that the United States not fight two ground wars at the same time. At this point, NBC military analyst and retired General Barry McCaffrey appeared in the story to opine, “I'm uneasy about recognizing up front that we're not going to retain that capability because it tells your adversaries, look, they're tied up in a place like Korea, it's time for mischief in the Persian Gulf.”

At the end of the piece, Brian Williams interviewed retired Army colonel and Medal of Honor winner Jack Jacobs on the set. “I'm not convinced we're going to be able to do what we need to do with that small an Army,” warned Jacobs.

We issue this citation to NBC for getting not one but two military analysts to cast aspersions on Pentagon budget cuts. Take heed, Villagers: General Electric, which owns a significant stake in NBC, is one of the nation's biggest defense contractors. If you want to keep working in this business, you'd be wise to follow the lead of NBC News and remember who butters your bread.
